PEACE VIGIL WEDNESDAY,
JOIN US CODEPINK, World Can’t Wait, Occupy SF and others for our weekly (most Wednesdays)
This Week Theme: Sanctions are War and Kill! The End Sanctions Now Campaign!
In our post-Cold War society, economic sanctions have become one of the leading tools to advance America’s interests and to assert their influence on the global stage without resorting to military interventions. Sanctions are thought to be a peaceful alternative to military action and as having no casualties. Sanctions are in fact a weapon of Economic War causing millions of causalities. Sanctions create chronic shortages of basic necessities, food, medicine and millions have died from starvation and disease. Sanctions cause economic dislocation here at home and aboard as trade is disrupted. Sanctions put people out of work as businesses close, they create hyperinflation and governmental services are disrupted causing hardship for the working people and their families in sanction countries. Yet sanctioned regimes remain in power, many for years: North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Russian, Venezuela to name a few of the 20 countries the US has sanctions against. Sanctions have increased anti-U.S. sentiment and allows government hardliners to consolidate authoritarian rule, weaken the opposition, restrict political liberties and make it harder for internal proponents of democracy and human rights to operate. Sanctions are not bringing peace or spreading democracy they only kill and spread hardships. Codepink has been working with many organizations to end Economic War for some time. NOW is an opportunity to combine efforts to raise consciousness on this crucial issue. This broad campaign will include protests and demonstrations, lobbying, petition drives and all forms of educational efforts. Please join us to end sanctions!
