1-4 pmArt Workshop and Picnic, Ohlone Park, Berkeley, make props & costumes for the following action.
On Sept. 21 CODEPINK SF Bay Area will join with peace, anti-militarism, social justice, frontline and climate activists to reveal the war economy in our midst that is destroying the planet, and we will lift up our vision of a peace economy that every child and being deserves.
Watch the CODEPINK 8/23 “Militarism and Climate webinar” featuring Sunrise Movement, , Extinction Rebellion, Friends of the Earth, Veterans for Peace, World Beyond War, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Jeju Island activists, and more for background on this topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKu2BEDqII0.
We may hold the action at Lockheed, BlackRock or Chevron or all 3 in a caravan, or we may choose a central location for the action. Still planning. Share your ideas and plan with us!
For Tuesday’s action we will perform tableaus from “Billionaires for War.” Remember the “Billionaires for Bush”? We’ll be right out front about our love of money and war and our worry that the money pipeline is being closed off with the end of the Afghan War. After all, War is a sure-fire big money maker for us billionaires– Nancy Pelosi, Lockheed, BlackRock, Chevron, aka the oligarchy and military industrial media complex. We love money and power. We can’t let wars end and bases close! What about a war with China or Russia? What about weaponizing space? What great ideas for keeping the money flowing, huh?
Characters and props needed:
Nancy Pelosi: We have a Pelosi face mask, wear a Pelosi dress or suit. Maybe bring a pint of $15 Jenny’s chocolate ice cream to share.
Billionaires: Come in your fancy clothes; gowns, tiaras, boas, pearls, bring cocktail glasses, cigars, and money bags.
CEOs: Wear a suit and tie if you’re a CEO or banker. Bring a briefcase, lots of fake money.
Pentagon: Does anyone have army general or military clothes, medals, hats? Bring drones, missiles, tanks, fighter jets, etc.
Afghan woman refugee: wear anything, head covering.
CODEPINK: wear pink.
I’ll bring some costume items and signs saying LOCKHEED, BLACKROCK, CHEVRON, PENTAGON, etc.
Tableau #1: The billionaires, military, oil executives and the financiers whose investments in weapons and war are making more billionaires every day are commiserating together, worried that the Afghan war is ending (it’s ending, right?) , etc.
What’s going to happen to their war profits? They need U.S. wars to continue somewhere so the money can keep pouring in. The Afghan refugees are worrisome. Let’s make sure they are mostly going to other countries. The Afghan woman watches. CODEPINK fumes.
Tableau #2: Brainstorming happens. Ideas are floated. BlackRock is worried that war profits are going to tank. The Pentagon doesn’t know where the trillions it gets from Congress is spent, but it needs more money. Lockheed says “Hey, what about starting new wars with Russia and China? What about Iran and Venezuela? Some fresh new wars are what we are calling for, now that the war in Afghanistan is ending.” The Afghan woman pleads for compassion. CODEPINK shakes her fist.
Tableau #3: Nancy Pelosi calms everyone down and says “We know what to do. We’ll keep the tax money flowing from Congress to our favorite war industry billionaires — the Pentagon, Chevron, Lockheed, Raytheon, Grumman, Boeing, Eric Prince/whatever Blackwater is called now. We’ll say that the Republicans are bad and we Democrats are nice. No one will notice that we’re voting more money for war all the time.” BlackRock is jubilant, and pours champagne for everyone, confetti and noise makers.
The Afghan woman weeps and then CODEPINK comes to her, embraces her, and together they step to the front.
Ending:
The Billionaires for War chant “FOREVER WARS ARE THE BEST! HOORAY FOR PELOSI AND HOORAY FOR US: THE BILLIONAIRES WHO PROFIT FROM WAR”
CODEPINK and the Afghan woman step in front of the Billionaires and we all chant “END THE WAR ECONOMY! WE NEED A PEACE ECONOMY! STOP THE WAR MONEY PIPELINE, END THE FOREVER WARS AND CLOSE THE BASES NOW!”
While this situation is no laughing matter, maybe we can have a little outrageous fun while we’re calling out the billionaires who made huge profits from the 20-year war in Afghanistan. They are the only winners, other than the Taliban leaders and some Afghan officials who managed to fly out of Kabul along with Afghanistan’s treasury.
Rise, Love, Resist!

The national CodePink organization organizes for justice for Iraqis and to hold war criminals accountable. CodePink actively opposes the U.S. war in Afghanistan, torture, the detention center at Guantanamo, weaponized and spy drones, the prosecution of whistleblowers, U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine and repressive regimes.

Rooted in a network of local organizers, CodePink's tactics include satire, street theatre, creative visuals, civil resistance, and directly challenging powerful decision-makers in government and corporations. And, of course, wearing pink!
