CODEPINK MONTHLY GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE PEACE WALK, Celebrate 11 years of Peace Walking on the Bridge!

By Toby Blomé
This is the beginning of our 12th year of bridge walks!!! We really appreciate your commitment and know that you would probably rather be weeding your gardens or going out to brunch. Thank you for continuing to show up.

It was a grand day, though very windy at times….making one feel they were a sailing ship when the wind was at their backs.  Huge thanks to Laura, Mary, Diana and Charlotte for driving up from the South Bay to join us, and bringing the beautiful Codepink banner.  As usual, many visitors from around the world greeted us with smiles and thumbs up and accepted our flyers, including folks from Slovakia and the country of Georgia. Big thanks to Mary for bringing attention to the horrendous plight of Yemen with her large sign and a leaflet calling us into action:  Call Congress:  No More Military Funding to Saudi Arabia!  We completed our walk at the plaza with a bit of champagne and treats, and more celebration afterwards at the Service Club in the Presidio.  We send healing prayers to Paul Karsh, a loyal bridge walker, who couldn’t join us this month due to back pain from a recent fall:  Heal fast Paul, We need you!

In Honor of Martin Luther King Day, our flyer invited bridge walkers out of their apathy and into action:

Martin Luther King said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” MLK spoke out strongly against U.S. military violence and crimes during the Vietnam war.  One famous MLK quote:  “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world is my own country.” In 50 years things have gotten worse:  Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Pakistan….the U.S. drops tens of thousands of bombs on these poor countries EVERY YEAR!  How often do we hear about it?  Today we honor and celebrate Martin Luther King for speaking truth.       ABOLISH WAR, DRONES AND NUKES!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARTIN!  WE LOVE YOU!

Many thanks to my CODEPINK sisters and brothers who refuse to be silent about things that matter. Our lives are richer for it all!  love & peace!  Toby

The national CodePink organization organizes for justice for Iraqis and to hold war criminals accountable. CodePink actively opposes the U.S. war in Afghanistan, torture, the detention center at Guantanamo, weaponized and spy drones, the prosecution of whistleblowers, U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine and repressive regimes.

Rooted in a network of local organizers, CodePink's tactics include satire, street theatre, creative visuals, civil resistance, and directly challenging powerful decision-makers in government and corporations. And, of course, wearing pink!
